Let the world change you... and you can change the world

Meet the new boss. Same as the old boss.

It’s been a pretty discouraging last couple of weeks for what was supposed to be a “new improved” Congress. The attempt to restore Habeas Corpus failed. Incredible — 46 U.S. Senators don’t believe in the Constitution of the United States. Then yet another attempt to de-fund the Iraq war and start bringing the troops home failed. 70% of Americans oppose the war — what happened to the idea that Congress was there to carry out the will of the people? And even more mind boggling was the defeat of Sen. Jim Webb’s bill seeking more time at home for the troops between deployments. How in the world can you say you support our troops and vote against that bill? This is as outrageous as it gets. If you’re driving around town with one of those “support the troops” ribbon stickers on your car, or you’ve got an American flag pin in the coat of your lapel, by God you sure as hell better have written your Congressperson demanding an explanation for why that bill didn’t pass. If hypocrisy were illegal, two-thirds of the country would be in prison.

And now to top things off, we have this uproar about a MoveOn ad criticizing General Petraeus. People, this is supposed to be a free country, a democracy. There is nothing wrong with criticizing a public official — if you don’t agree with the criticism, then just “move on” (and how about that pun?). Sheez, it’s that simple. And here’s what’s most appalling about this — the people that are so upset over the MoveOn ad are the same exact people that slandered John McCain, a decorated war hero and ex-POW. They are the same people who smeared Max Cleland, a decorated veteran who lost three limbs fighting for this country. And they are the same people who attacked John Kerry, yet another decorated vet with three Purple Hearts. And in all three of those cases, everything they said were outright lies! Nothing but total fabrications! Whereas everything that the MoveOn ad said was the absolute truth. So how in the world do these people get upset about MoveOn speaking openly and honestly, but at the same time have nothing at all to say about all these other instances where veterans were attacked with outright vicious lies?

So how does Congress react to all this? These idiots pass resolutions condemning MoveOn! And these resolutions passed not just along partisan lines either — a significant number of Democrats voted for them. So basically we now have a congress that not only disregards the will of the people, doesn’t believe in the Constitution of the United States, and doesn’t give a rat’s ass about our troops, but now they are condemning people for doing nothing more than simply speaking the truth.

As the late-and-great Molly Ivins used to say, “The first rule of holes is when you’re in one, stop digging”. I had thought with the mid-term elections of last year that maybe we had finally at least stopped digging. Silly me.

Update 2007.10.25: Looks like we’ve finally found a Democrat with a spine! Rep. Pete Stark nails the worthless bastard in the White House for exactly what he is! And even the attempt to censure him for his comments failed to pass. Could this at long last be a light at the end of the tunnel? And we’ve also got Sen. Chris Dodd vowing to wage a one-man war against the telecom immunity FISA bill. Count ’em folks — that’s two congresspersons with courage enough to stand up for their country. Could we have the start of a real movement here?
