A Balancing Act

As the evidence of all the criminal acts that were committed over the last eight years by the Bush administration continues to pile up, it’s going to be harder and harder not to start following up and begin prosecuting some of the criminals.  But I can understand that it is a delicate balancing act that the Obama administration faces.  Clearly the two most important issues on the table right now are health care reform and the economy, with the environment a close third.  You certainly don’t want to do anything to jeopardize passing some significant legislation in those areas.  And to start prosecutions now would inevitably lead to a lot of partisan sniping, which could derail everything.  So the strategy at this point should probably be to keep all the criminal investigations on the back burner, but make sure the pot remains simmering so that when the time is right the prosecutions can be brought to the top of the priority list.  And that would at least appear to be what the Obama folks are doing.  It’s important that at some point the criminals of the Bush administration be held accountable.  Otherwise, long-term you virtually guarantee that some future administration will end up being even more criminal than the one we just threw out of office.  We came close enough to becoming yet another banana republic during the Bush years.  We don’t want to risk that again.  And the only way to insure that is to see that these people are convicted and serve time for their crimes.
