Let the world change you... and you can change the world

Money Is The Root Of All Christianity

I’ve always been amused at this concept of a “conservative Christian”, an oxymoron if there ever was one. If you’ve ever been to Sunday School, you know very well that Jesus Christ was the original Socialist. If you are truly a Christian, one who follows the teachings of Jesus, then politically you have to be a progressive and a liberal. Anything else is pure hypocrisy. And so it is with millions of people who call themselves Christian, and yet politically vote for conservatives. They go to church on Sunday, say their prayers every now and then, but vote for politicians who continually take money from the poor and middle class and give it to the rich, who do nothing to help the disadvantaged, who provide cover for mega-corporations to steal from everyone, who sanction unilateral invasions of foreign countries and the killing of tens of thousands of innocent people.

So oddly, it’s somewhat refreshing when you read what the good folks at Goldman Sachs are now saying about their brand of Christianity — that “Jesus’s injunction to love others as you love yourself is an endorsement of self-interest”. Wow, no hypocrisy there! Just turning the teachings of Jesus totally upside down is all. Greed and self-centeredness are actually virtues! If only everyone was as greedy and self-centered as Wall Street executives are, what a better place the world would be.

So I say kudos to these guys. In their brand of Christianity they worship money, and they’re proud of it. It’s refreshing to see such honesty coming from the right wing. When they end up in hell, at least it won’t be because of their dishonesty.
