Let the world change you... and you can change the world

Idiot Nation In The White House

Sometimes Idiot America is a hard place to figure out.  There are plenty of examples of how the average American is a total idiot (no better example than this!), but stupidity in America is by no means limited to mainstream citizens.  Here’s Obama’s budget director Jack Lew on the massive spending cuts that the administration is seeking:

We are reducing programs that are important programs that we care about, and we’re doing what every family does when it sits around its kitchen table: we’re making the choices about what do we need for the future.

Are you friggin’ kidding me?  First off, where does anyone get the notion that you run the world’s second largest economy the same way you run your family’s finances?  That’s totally absurd.  Surely Lew doesn’t believe that for a second, and what he’s really doing is just playing political games here, trying to appeal to the average American on the theory that he is stupid enough to believe that the same economic principles that apply to making ends meet for a family of four on a household income of $40,000 apply to running a country’s economy that has a GDP of $15 trillion that affects 300 million people.

But the reality is that the average American apparently is smart enough to know that the deficit is in fact not all that big of a concern, but rather jobs are the biggest issue facing the country right now.  So why in the world is the administration making the deficit the number one priority?  It makes no sense at all — there are no economic indicators that would make you think the deficit is a major problem (core inflation is running low, ten-year bond rates are still relatively low) and the public is not overly concerned about the deficit.  And how in the world can anyone think that cutting government spending is going to lead to more jobs being created????  When you cut spending, you cut jobs, the economy suffers, unemployment gets worse!  That’s not only basic Economics 101, it’s just plain common sense.  Now it’s one thing to see Republicans trying to convince you that cutting spending will help the job situation — they really don’t give a rat’s ass about jobs, as the people they cater to already have jobs and lots of money.  But for the Obama administration to be buying in to this bullshit is insane.  It would seem Idiot America encompasses even the Obama administration these days.
