The Republican War On Teachers
The other day I was having a conversation with some friends about the educational system in the U.S. and I happened to comment to one of them that “you would have made a great teacher”. The words were hardly out of my mouth when it occurred to me that what I had just said could easily be taken as an insult these days, thanks to the war the Republican Party is waging on teachers. Once a highly revered profession, on a nightly basis we now hear Republicans denigrating the profession, calling teachers out for being lazy, overpaid incompetents — today’s version of Ronald Reagan’s “welfare queens”. How in the world can’t the average American be outraged at this? I can kind of understand how the typical person might look the other way when these bigots attack minority groups like immigrants and gays and Muslims — but going after teachers, people who are entrusted with the education of our children? It makes no sense at all. And yet the Republican Party seems to be getting away with it in city after city.
